Representative Schuette: Red tape in Lansing starting to unravel thanks to House Republicans
RELEASE|January 16, 2026

State Representative Bill G. Schuette today highlighted his continued work in the Michigan House to roll back regulations that have hampered workers and families across the state and made it more difficult to make a living.

“Last year, I was pleased to be joined by members of our House Rules Committee as we looked into areas where we could cut red tape that has been allowed to run unchecked in Lansing for years,” said Schuette, who chairs the committee. “The bottom line is these regulations are making it harder for people to live, work and raise their families here in Michigan. This stretches across many different areas of life – like licensing requirements for people’s livelihoods, housing, health care and more.

“Now we’re really seeing the results of that review process and the bills that came from it. Some of the first pieces of legislation we voted on in the House in 2026 will get rid of needless bureaucracy that has weighed on so many, which will cut costs and make life more affordable in the process.”

Schuette on Thursday voted for a trio of bills that work to lower costs for barbers and cosmetologists. House Bill 4911 allows a barber to operate a mobile barbershop, which is currently allowed under law for cosmetologists and provides a way for people to grow their careers. HB 5207 modifies barber instructor licensing requirements to provide pathways for cosmetology instructors to become barber instructors and vice versa to lower costs for those wishing to pursue these fields, and HB 4962 allows cosmetology schools to operate branch facilities and reach more students.

Schuette noted that with Thursday’s votes, a total of 16 bills that were borne from the Rules Committee’s initial work and Red Tape Reduction Report have been sent to the Senate, with seven more awaiting floor votes in the House. Additional bills that have been introduced remain under consideration in various House committees.

“Workers and families across our region and the state have been clear. Affordability is a critical issue in their day-to-day lives and every regulation we roll back is lowering a cost,” Schuette said. “We will continue our work to get government out of the way and create an environment that supports workers and job providers instead of bureaucracy.”
