State Representative Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland) issued the following statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address:
“While the governor seems focused on growing government and creating new programs on the backs and pocketbooks of hardworking taxpayers, Republicans in the House remain committed to lowering costs for workers and families.
“I am working right now on cutting red tape and rolling back burdensome regulations so Michigan businesses can expand, hire and compete. That means more jobs, lower prices, higher pay and more prosperity.
“At the start of this legislative term, I stepped in to protect wages and paid leave when a court ruling threatened local restaurants and service industry workers. We found a plan that works for both employees and small businesses and got an agreement signed into law before people were put out of work through no fault of their own. The current year budget we fought for also works with federal initiatives and eliminates state taxes on tips, overtime and social security to help people keep more of what they’ve earned.
“House Republicans are now planning to lead the way with massive property tax reforms that will provide help to everyone – from young families, homeowners on the move and seniors – while also lowering monthly electric and gas bills. Michigan families need help, and we are providing real relief through responsible, sustainable governing. The governor’s plan isn’t enough, and we are going to make sure she knows it.”
