State Rep. Phil Green today touted a recent announcement that looks to provide more reliable energy and would work to lower costs across the region.

Last week, Consumers Energy disclosed plans for an existing site in Thetford Township in Genesee County. The site will be repurposed so a new natural gas plant can deliver fast, on-demand power for people and families.

“The high cost of energy bills are impacting workers, job providers and families across the district I represent in Lapeer, Genesee and Tuscola counties, and it’s just one part of the affordability equation for many people,” Green said. “By increasing capability and focusing on clean, reliable sources beyond a fixation on green energy, we can bring affordable, accessible energy to more people right here in our communities while positioning our area as a leader in this vital industry. This is an exciting announcement, and I look forward to the new plant being up and running.”

The Thetford Township facility is one of two planned plants, with the other located in Bay County. Combined, they would provide 1.5 gigawatts of power supply capacity, which would be capable of serving hundreds of thousands of homes.

Green is in his fourth term serving the 67th House District, which includes the city of Lapeer and the townships of Deerfield, Elba, Hadley, Lapeer, Marathon, Mayfield, Metamora and Oregon in Lapeer County, the townships of Forest, Genesee, Richfield and Thetford in Genesee County, and Watertown Township in Tuscola County.
